Day 43

Name: Sam Terrill

Profession High school student, senior

Location: His home in Marblehead, MA

Question: Why are you where you are right now?

Answer: I don’t have time to waste

Okay, okay. So technology isn’t foolproof.

Tonight I interviewed high school senior Sam Terrill, again over a live chat. However, I did not save the interview as we went along, so I lost the first part of it. Lesson learned.

Luckily, you didn’t miss much. Terrill told me he was in the middle of moving out of his house in Marblehead, Massachusetts to a bigger house on the beach in the same city. The family was moving so his mother’s boyfriend could move in with him, which, Terrill described, was both a big deal and not. They’ve been together a while, he said, so it wasn’t “weird,” but the move itself was a giant step.

8:35pm Sam Terrill

…i will definately be upset to go because we've lived in the house for about 6 years now

and its in a great location in the town

a minute away from the stores and a minute in the other direction from old town

doesnt get much better than that

but the new house is gunna be great

8:37pm Sierra

Good! Is the move stressing you out at all? That can oftentimes be a big deal, especially if you're involved in any after-school activities.

8:37pm Sam

my after school activities are too time consuming at this point so no

but it has generated a lot of stress

mostly because i have been cleaning out me and my brothers room and looking throuhg our childhood memories with out him

other than that its been pretty relaxing

it actually feels like im acomplishing something everyday

instead of just lying around all day

8:40pm Sierra

Aw! I'm sorry about your brother. What has the last year and a half been like without him around? You guys are really close, right?

8:40pm Sam

yeah id say we're closer than most siblings

at first when he was gone it was pretty lonely

but i addapted in a month or too and now its extra exciting when i actually get to see him

which is tomorrow!!

but because of this move i have missed him a lot more than i usually do

8:42pm Sierra

Why is he coming home tomorrow? For the move? Spring Break? Or does he usually come home for the weekends?

8:42pm Sam

he doesnt usually come home on any old weeekend

but he is because we need to know what stuff of his we can give away or throw out

plus hes coming snowboarding with us tomorrow

and his spring break is in a few more weeks so i get to see him then too

8:45pm Sierra

Okay, okay. That's not too bad. I have another question that's a little off-topic. You're a high school senior, right?

8:45pm Sam

yes i am

8:45pm Sierra

Do you have your college plans worked out at all?

8:46pm Sam

nott completely

i am still waiting to hear back from 3 colleges

and i still need to work out scholarshiop applications

but id say things are going pretty smoothly

as for location

id like to stay in new england or at least nearby so that i can go home without it being really expensive

8:48pm Sierra

What are you looking at and which school(s) are you crossing your fingers for specifically? Are you applying to any of them for their soccer or wrestling programs?

8:49pm Sam

well i have already been accepted to my top choice at the moment which is umass lowell

i would like to play soccer in college but im going to have to see how much time that would take up because thats not my main concern about college

im not going to reject a college just because it doesnt have a wrestling or soccer program though

8:50pm Sierra

What is your number one priority? When you choose a school, what will have really sold it for you?

8:51pm Sam

well

im going to school for engineering

so i guess id need a really hands on school

because experience in your major is the most impportant thing

other than that i guess reputation and location are pretty important as well

and then theres also cost

which is a big factor even though i wouldnt like it to be

8:53pm Sierra

If anyone understands, I do. Tell me, why engineering?

8:53pm Sam

well i am strong in subjects like math and science

and not so much english or history

and i enjoy doing calculations and math equations and figuring out problems

and i guess engineering is where you do that the most

im not exactly sure if its going to be what i think it is but i guess ill find out next year

i guess what id REALLY like to be is a scientist or researcher

but id just be worried about getting a good job out of college

because if your not going to get a good job ater college whats the point in going in the first place?

after*

8:57pm Sierra

True. So you're looking more for job security with a job you're good at?

8:58pm Sam

yeah that sounds about right

9:00pmSierra

If that's the case, where do you hope to find your everyday happiness? In five, ten, fifteen years from now, what do you hope will be the reason you get up in the morning? What is it, in the long run, you're looking not with your job (or maybe with your job), but with your life?

9:01pm Sam

well im not entirely sure what job im going to have later

but i like to think ill keep doing exciting things in my free time

maybe its that im still playing the sprots that i love

maybe im still with my girlfriend

maybe i just love living everyday

because i dont like to take life for granted

its actually the most valuable thing we have

at least thats what i believe

9:03pm Sierra

Okay! I like it! Well, thank you for your time, Sam! Is there anything you'd like to add?

9:03pm Sam

well id just like to thank you as well

that really helped me organize my thoughts
